It has been a while since I’ve last posted. Partly due to the busyness of the end of a school year and multiple church meetings, but mostly because I’ve needed the late evenings (my writing time) as downtime. While I find blogging and writing incredibly fulfilling, there is something wonderful about curling up in bed with a good book and reading till you can’t keep your eyes open any longer.
A few weeks ago, while my DH was out of town, I caught our 7 year old reading (on a school night) at 11:15 p.m. I thought they were both fast asleep tucked in their beds, but as I walked up the stairs I caught a glimpse of the oldest sitting by the door of her room reading by the hallway light.
I did the typical mom thing and asked, “What do you think you are doing young lady?” To which she replied, “I didn’t get any time today to sneak read ‘Little House in the Big Woods’ between subjects.” If my DH was home, she would have been sent back to bed while he took the book “for safe-keeping.” As for me, I get the need for downtime and the joy of escape and adventure through reading, so I let her read on. (I knew that this meant that Tuesday morning was going to be a little whiny, but it was a risk I was willing to take).
By midnight, she was passed out on the floor of the room with the paperback still in hand. As I carried her to her bed, she didn’t dare let go of the book. Somethings are just too good to let go of!
I hope she follows in my footsteps, as I have followed in my mom’s of not letting go of the joy of reading that has you staying up way past your bedtime!
